As if you need another reason to visit the Bahamas, we’ve got the scoop on a family yacht cruising around the Bimini islands onboard the Astondoa Top Deck 65.
WHY VISIT BIMINI ISLAND?
Really, the better question is ‘why not?’ With just a two hour cruise from Miami, you can be in another country with crazy clear water and white-sand beaches. Bimini, which until recently could only be reached by private yacht, seaplane or charter flight, offers the fantastic Bahama experience without all the crowds. The two islands of Bimini lie 50 miles due east of the Miami coast; literally, a hop, skip and a jump away from the busy Florida scene.
As you approach North and South Bimini, the first thing that you’ll see is the striking turquoise color of the sea. Visitors adore the casual Bahamian vibe here and the long stretches of pristine beaches. Yachties love to explore the uninhabited cays and unforgettable snorkeling areas.
WHAT SHOULD YOU SEE AROUND BIMINI ISLAND?
Not only are the Bimini islands the closest part of the Bahamas to the U.S., but they are also near the warm Gulf Stream waters which bring bluefin tuna, sailfish and blue marlin. This makes it the ideal weekend spot for sport fishing.
It’s always fun to explore the island and the laidback dives in Bailey Town and Alice Town. Here you can snack on fresh conch cooked in at least 20 different ways and wash it down with a cool Bahama Mama.
It also wouldn’t be a proper Bimini experience without seeing the famous shipwreck. Hire a guide and swim around the offshore reef were the World War I SS Sapona has sat since 1926. You will be surrounded by all different types of fish, as well as stingrays and blacktip sharks.
You will probably spot a pod of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins playing in the wake of your yacht. Any time of year, you can jump in and swim with wild dolphins around Bimini. They are social creatures that respond well to human interaction. Anyone will tell you that playing with the dolphins is an incredible opportunity that you can’t miss.
Scuba divers are drawn to this area for the chance to swim with the sharks; hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, silky sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks and even tiger sharks can be found here. From the comfort of your yacht, however, you can spot whales. At different times during the year, pilot whales, humpback whales and sperm whales roam in open sea off of the Bimini coast.
HOW SHOULD YOU TRAVEL TO BIMINI ISLAND?
This one is a no-brainer. There is now a two-hour ferry service that runs daily from Miami to Bimini. But, nothing offers the flexibility, privacy and luxury of cruising in your own yacht.
We recommend cruising in the Astondoa Top Deck 65. It’s the ideal day boat for enjoying time with family and friends. The extensive deck platform with retractable wings easily accommodates up to 25 guests. Plus, it has space for outdoor dining, grilling and entertaining. Surprising features include a transparent Jacuzzi and retractable sunroof.
